The Enemy of My Enemy is Not my Friend

I have tried to stop following politics in Nigeria as the practise is quite nauseating, and I have been cautioned over my criticisms towards the government, but as the curious cat, I find myself still keeping up with that crap and seething inwards. I feel sad and frustrated when I see our youths trading words with one another, fighting and defending these politicians. They fail to understand that in politics, they never have permanent friends of foes, only permanent interests.

In Nigeria, the elections keep coming up and except you shut yourself out completely, you must hear news of all that is going on during the elections. Yesterday, Nigerian Twitterspace was filled with comments over the Twitter fight between two controversial politicians, Femi Fani-Kayode, and Jimoh Ibrahim. Both of them are the same, in my opinion. Fani-Kayode has been a politician known for singing for whoever feeds him, his frequent rants online has been attributed to his history of drug abuse and other mental issues. Jimoh Ibrahim, on the other hand, is a controversial business man who has been alleged to run all the companies he took over into the ground, and owe workers' salaries. Jimoh Ibrahim came out to contest for the Governorship position in his state, Ondo. You can imagine the dread of some people when an alleged fraudster wants to be the Governor of the state.

However, with the mess going on in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) (story for another day), Jimoh Ibrahim lost his bid to contest, thanks to an Appeal Court ruling, backed by the Supreme court. Next thing, Femi-Fani Kayode decided to attack Jimoh Ibrahim, both of them belong to the same political party o, but different factions. Insults and names were hauled back and forth; from allegations of homosexuality, to drug use, to involvement in rituals, it was messy and very shameful.

In this case, there's no winning side for me. The enemy of my enemy is not my friend. Femi- Fani-Kayode is known for switching sides at the mere sign of trouble. For a while he was on the case of Igbos, when he was against the ex-President Jonathan. He abused and insulted everyone from the late Ojukwu, to Chinua Achebe, to the Igbos who were killed during the civil war. When The Ex President forgave him and accepted him back to the party, his songs changed automatically. However, as soon as President Buhari took over power, he knew he was in trouble for his past atrocities. He started writing and currying the favour of the Igbos who already felt marginalised by the federal government. All of a sudden, he has fallen in love with the Igbo race, married an Igbo girl, and is telling us all the ways the present government has been unfair to us, and our people believe him!! Now we see Igbo youths writing in his defence whenever the anti-graft agency arrests him to answer for the cases against him. They believe that because he is abusing the President (whom a lot of Igbo people do not like), he is automatically for us. Our people better wake up and smell the coffee, the enemy of your enemy could be a sneakier enemy o. You can hate the President, but that doesn't mean that anyone that is also against the president is your friend.

That's how some people carry other people's fights on top of their heads, while the people they're fighting for will make up and they'd end up looking like fools. I hope My Igbo people will leave these two shameless men: FFK and Jimoh Ibrahim to fight in peace, exposing themselves. Like I said earlier, Nigerian politics is dirty and petty; if you cannot descend to that level, don't bother joining.

I long for the day when the Judiciary will live up to its responsibilities of dispensing true justice, and our politicians will fight for the good of Nigeria, not their personal interests.

I wish the people of Ondo State goodluck as they elect their Governor tomorrow. I sincerely wish they'd look beyond the fake promises and 'stomach infrastructure', and vote for someone who has the interest of their state at heart, even if the person didn't share money the way others did.

Nigeria will be better. Enjoy your weekend.
Hugs...
