A Little Empathy Is All We Need

Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone…just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.- F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Hello everyone, how was your weekend? Hope it was a good one? Are you set for the holidays? I know things are tough in the country right now, but we always have reasons to be thankful and celebrate, at least we’re alive and healthy, right? I’m good and rearing to go. I always travel to my village for the Christmas holidays o. I haven’t quite matured enough to spend the holidays alone in the city, lol. Just the thought of being away from Abuja for 2 weeks is good enough for me. Oh, the lazy, fun times ahead! Hahahaha… don’t blame me, I’m a village girl at heart.

According to Psychology Today, empathy is the experience of understanding another person’s condition from their own perspective. It is an awareness of other people’s feelings and emotions. Empathy is not feeling sorrowful or pity or compassion for what another person is going through, as some people often confuse it with sympathy. The person expecting some form of empathy from you is not expecting pity, but a little understanding.

In the world we live in, people are going through different tough situations, and if we cannot help them out of it, we can at least understand their plight. Unfortunately we live in an era of ‘clapbacks’, and people think being sarcastic is the new cool and we’re quick to drop the sarcastic and mocking remarks when we should show some empathy. Someone is going through difficult times, probably as a result of some mistakes and wrong decisions made, and decides to open up to seek for advice or just to let if off his/her chest. Instead of the advice and understanding he/she seeks, the mockery and abuse come flooding in.

Do we wonder why the culture of silence is still prevalent in this part of the world? Nobody wants to open up only to get criticized and judged. Are you aware that the way your respond to a person’s problems could lead the person to commit suicide? I wonder why we do things like this. Could it be that we want to vent our own frustrations on another person? I don’t subscribe to the school of thought that we are free to say whatever we want. Empathy should trump freedom of speech. I’m still of the school of thought that says, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. If you cannot be empathetic towards another person’s situation, don’t worsen it by being judgmental. Nobody is perfect or above mistakes.

Enjoy your day and be kind to one another.

Hugs....

  1. Well said dear. The world we live in would be a lot better if people were more sensitive to others situations.Nigerians especially have a long way to go on this issue. We are from a country were the society expects too much idealist perfection from it's people, and the cultural values are supposedly forcefully implemented by harshly criticizing it's subjects. This leads people to steal, to depression, to wrong unsuited marriages, to conceal and tell lies, to even commit suicide! Smh. ___Keep up the good work on ur blog nne. The traffic will come. Xoxo and happy holidays from Princess Ceenthie Okafor
