The Nigerian Youth and increasing restlessness

My office is on the same street with the People Democratic Party's headquarters, and it wasn't easy when PDP was in power, as the road was often blocked to our own detriment. When PDP lost to APC we heaved a sigh of relief (or so we thought), as once in a while you'd still see small 'rented' crowd cheering one politician or the other.

This morning as I drove to work, the place was bustling with unusual activity, I saw youths, in their hundreds, wearing T-shirts, carrying placards and posters and chanting. I had to pause o, to avoid driving into a rioting crowd and having them smash my car. I no fit shout! Upon a closer inspection, I discovered that the posters were that of Ali Modu Sheriff, the ex PDP chairman, and the man was in his Range Rover Sports parked in front of the Office complex chilling, while his rented crowd made noise and sweated it out in the morning sun!! Imagine that! Apparently he came to 'occupy' the office, despite being told to stand-down by the Nigerian Court. Anyway, I don't even blame him; nobody in this country respects court orders any more.

What made me sad wasn't even that he came to occupy the office by force(because that's their wahala), but the number of youths chanting their support for him. I bet you that most of them there don't even know the man or his leadership abilities. Heck, they might not even be members of the PDP, and therefore shouldn't be bothered about who becomes the PDP chairman. What then could make them to leave their beds, stand there and chant their support for this man if not money?? I bet that with the presence of armed Policemen and Civil Defence Corps officers there, any smell of violence will most likely result in gun shots, or tear gas, and who knows who'll be the scape-goat?

The times are really hard, I know, but I wish the youths there would ask Ali Modu Sheriff to bring his children to protest on his behalf (I believe he has young men and women in his house), who are the beneficiaries of his wealth, power and position. Idleness is killing our youths o! Unemployment rate is high, that is why someone can wake up in the morning, carry placard, stand in the sun and chant nonsense for a corrupt politician whose children are probably still asleep in their well air conditioned mansions, and for a mere pittance! God have mercy on our generation! Terrible!! May we not waste away while we wait for the government to put things right. If we loose our youth, we have lost a generation. May God bless the works of our hands, and give our youths wisdom to do the right thing.
Hugs...

  2. That's their daily bread they are pursuing. I bet they may justify it by saying that it is better than armed robbery and kidnapping. The situation in Naija is going downhill. I am waiting for this government to come out and say the truth;we are in a recession and show us planned austerity measures including reducing the cost of governance to fix our money problems. Anyway back to this clown and his hired goons, one wonders what exactly he's trying to achieve by sitting there?
