Contentment: A Form of Happiness

How are y'all doing this lovely Monday morning?
Hope you had a nice weekend. I know I did😉

A brief history: I grew up in an average home, or you can even say below average. I mean, when both parents are school teachers in Nigeria, I believe we can conclude that that's a below-the-average kinda home. Besides making sure we had good education,
both in school and at home, one of the main things that was drummed into our ears was to be content with what we had, and boy, has that helped us through the years!

It is not easy not to want more than what you have, it is part of the human nature to want more, that is not a crime. However, the issue is what you are willing to do to get that 'more', you see, therein lies the problem. In the university, we saw girls who got involved in all sorts just to meet up with a particular status. While we were doing school boyfriend and girlfriend for love, some babes were already after the money, designer bags, gold, and the foreign trips. We were the learners back then, 'jew men' as you'd put it, but the upbringing I had helped me see the folly in all that.

Contentment does not mean you shouldn't aspire to have more than what you presently have, but I believe it comes from being satisfied  with what you have at every point in time, while aspiring to get more. These days, we read of girls who borrow clothes, shoes, weave-ons, cars, etc from their friends and act like it's theirs. To what end, really? If you can only afford the cheaper synthetic or human hair weave-ons, why not respect yourself and your family and buy them. Those expensive ones you borrow and fix won't make you feel any better, as I believe you can't even scratch your hair very well, for fear of spoiling someone's weave. I mean, you cannot use someone's borrowed shoes or dress and dance anyhow, you gotta be careful before you spoil it.

Asides the fact that it is disgraceful, degrading and senseless to borrow in order to feel like 'you belong' to the big boys/girls club, what about the insult from the borrowee? Last week, two erstwhile friends quarrelled, and one took to the social media (as they do a lot these days), to insult the other, who apparently borrowed her stuff a lot to strut around and act rich. The Social media has not also helped in this regard; there is this insane pressure to keep up appearances on the social media platforms. The so-called celebrities and socialites are not left out also; from Bow-Wow posting a picture of himself on a passenger plane and claiming he was in a private jet, to our very own Dammy Krane getting arrested in the US after allegedly using a stolen credit card to rent a private jet. The list is endless, yet despite all the embarrassments brought on by lack of contentment and the fake life syndrome, humans still will not learn. When people like Diddy and Wizkid or Davido use private jets, some people who have not released any hit in years also want to have a luxurious ride in a private jet, with which money?

If you're satisfied with what you can afford at every point in life, you won't find yourself in these disgraceful situations. Parents should really try to instill it early in their children, also by showing examples. Don't want something because A or B has it, therefore you must have it too, that's just silly, and we don't want to be silly now, do we? 😊

In other news, today is World Environment Day and this year's theme is 'Connecting People to Nature'. Keeping our environment safe might sound foreign or technical, but we contribute in our own little way to the decay we face today. Before you think of companies and gas flaring, how do you dispose of your garbage? Are you one of those who litter the gutters, especially when it's raining, you bring out your trash cans and empty them in the gutters? We're encouraged to plant trees (remember that a tenant does not plant trees sha, lol) in order to make the environment more green. Remember, if we spoil our environment, we suffer the consequences.

Stay safe everyone, the world is getting scarier by the day.
I'm preparing for my exams, so I probably will post even less as I gotta study and make good grades before my mother flogs me, haha..

Have a great day and week ahead.
Peace...
