International Day of Families

The importance of the family unit cannot be overemphasized, as we all have our families, blood and adopted. May 15th of every year has been set aside by the United Nations since 1996 to celebrate the family, and promote awareness on several issues facing families globally.

The theme for this year is Families, education and well-being, and according to the UN, the focus is on the role of families and family-oriented policies in promoting education and overall well-being of their members. In particular, the Day is to raise awareness of the role of families in promoting early childhood education and lifelong learning opportunities for children and youth.

Family members and caregivers are supposed to look out for one another, especially the children and young ones with regard to basic education. If you have a child under your care, biological, fostering, or adopted; you owe that child basic education. Caring for the well-being of a young one requires physical, mental, emotional, and psychological attention. The world is filled with all kinds of perversion and it is your duty to protect these young ones from the perverts, especially sexual predators.

Caring for family begins with having the number of children you can cater for; we keep hammering on this but it seems some people do not get it. Education is not cheap in Nigeria, at least not yet, so to give your children good education will cost you a lot, and remember that whatever amount you pay as school fees today is the least amount you'd pay as the fees keep getting higher. That's one of the reasons you should think twice before birthing or adopting more children than you can conveniently cater for. It is pure wickedness to bring children into this world and abandon them on the streets to grow up as street urchins who later turn to criminals and terrorise the society.

Families should strive to be in peace, against all odds. As we mark this year's Day of Families, let us strive to make peace between parents, siblings, cousins, and other extended family members. the world will indeed be a better place for it.

Here's wishing everyone a great week ahead, from my family to yours.

Peace...
