Feminist, not Misandrist

Hello everyone,
How has your week been? Stressful, easy, or just boring? Whichever one, we're still thankful that the weekend is here again. Got some parties to attend to this weekend, so it's gonna be a fun one, lol.

Still in the spirit of International Women's Day, I wish to write about two words which a lot of people have often misused, some out of pure ignorance and some deliberately out of mischief.

Merriam Webster dictionary defines feminism as :
  1. 1the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
  2. 2organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests

  3. Misandry on the other hand is defined by the same dictionary as a hatred for men.
I feel saddened whenever feminism is mentioned and people say they're the people that hate men, who promote fights and quarrels between husband and wife, who encourage women to disrespect their husbands, etc. How wrong they are! It is even more painful when the people who claim they are educated and exposed still misunderstand what feminism is all about. I feel they purposefully misinterpret and twist the meaning to mislead the ignorant folks.

Feminism is not misandry. However, it cannot be disputed that some feminists are misandrists too, who for reasons best known to them harbour some hatred for men. When we talk about feminism, let me give you some examples of what we're fighting for. Imagine where a woman is qualified for a position at work, but doesn't get it simply because she is a woman, or when a woman and a man do the same work, but the woman is paid less. Let's not even go into intelligent, competent women who don't get into political posts because of their gender. This is the gap that feminism aims to bridge; not who should be cooking between husband and wife, or who is the head of the family, or who should bring money for cooking soup at home. These are personal and mundane issues which the feminist movement is way bigger than.

We shouldn't get it twisted biko, whether out of ignorance or pure mischief. If you don't understand the meaning of a word, just consult the dictionary and you would know. Do not join the bandwagon of some disgruntled, frustrated and confused women who hide under the feminist movement to cause trouble in their homes. These people are not feminists because they do not understand what feminism is all about. There are men who are also feminists, who understand that the movement is not about their wives disrespecting them, but securing a better future and creating a better society where their daughters, wives, sisters, and mothers would thrive in without prejudice based on their gender. Will the ignorant say that those men hate men too?

Enjoy your weekend biko. I ain't got the energy for a lot of grammar today.

Peace...
