Happy International Day of Happiness!!!

Did you know that since 2013, 20th March of every year is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Happiness? Well, it is and it might seem trivial to some, but the pursuit of happiness is apparently a fundamental human goal which we erroneously leave in others' hands. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy, as long as you don't do anything illegal or violate the rights of others.

Yesterday we read the news of a Medical Doctor who suddenly asked his driver to stop the car as they were on top of the famous 3rd Mainland bridge in Lagos, and to the driver's utmost shock, I believe, got down and jumped to his death! How shocking!! People have come up with various theories, from the probable to the outright ridiculous, as to why a seemingly well-off Medical Doctor could commit suicide in such an abrupt manner. We forget that not all the people we see are actually happy. behind the smiles often lie great pain and misery, but we put up a facade to show the world that all is well.

In life, we often attribute our happiness to people, things and events, forgetting that we should hold the key to our happiness. When we realise that we are responsible for our happiness, the issue of depression and its accompanying ills will be curbed to the barest minimum. A happy person will not attempt suicide, a happy person doesn't wish evil for another person, but a sad, bitter, heart wishes for everyone to be miserable, because as they say, misery loves company. We must note that happiness is not dependent on your finances, else the poor would have all committed suicide and died.

Be happy, do whatever it is that makes you happy, as long as it's not illegal or infringes on another person's human rights. I'm of the opinion that life is too short to be sad. Life has its own challenges, granted, but not letting it weigh you down is the key to happiness. Also, know that nobody is in this world to make you happy, only you can make yourself happy. Dependence on others for your happiness is a recipe for disaster. When you hear people advice others to 'just do what makes you happy', it might sound like a cliche, but that's the plain truth. You only live once, and how you live it depends totally on you.

So, go out there determined to be happy, today and always. The world and you will be better for it.

Peace, love and cupcakes...
