Hi lovelies, Hope you had that fabulous weekend? Well, it was
a wet, rainy and cold weekend here in Abuja, so I spent most of the time
indoors with my lil' munchkin. Therefore I feel well-rested for the week, which
I believe will be a great one, (fingers crossed).
As usual, I went to church yesterday and something the
preacher said stuck with me and has got me thinking. He likened the Christians
to the 'Wailing Wailers'. If you've been following Nigerian politics for the
past one year, you'd have noticed the frequent use of the term 'wailing
wailers' by the ruling party and its supporters to describe the major
opposition party and its supporters who are often quick to criticise the
government and its policies.
The Wiling Wailers is also the title of the debut album of
The Wailers made up of Nelly 'Bunny' Livingston, Robert 'Bob' Marley, and Peter
'Tosh' McIntosh. I don't get the correlation between the album title and our
own version of the wailing wailers, but that's by the way.
One may wonder why Christians will be likened to the Wailing
Wailers, right? Well, methinks it's because we doth protest too much! They pass
sharia law; we protest and cry that they want to Islamize Nigeria. They fuse
Religious studies (both Islamic and Christian) under the same group of subjects
in our secondary school curriculum, we scream that they want to convert our
children to Islam. We don’t do much to propagate our religion, and when others
make laws to enforce theirs on their members we wail. Why are we afraid?
Could it be because we know that most of our children are not
deeply-rooted in our religion? I have Muslim friends, and I know their children
attend Islamic classes at least 4 times in a week, where they are taught the
Quran and the doctrines of their religion according to their age groups. How
many of us send our children to Bible classes to study the Bible and the tenets
of the Christian Faith? Do we even teach them? In church, parents hold onto
their children as if the children will disappear if they allow them attend
their own class for a few hours where they are taught the Bible at their own
level. I know the security issue in Nigeria and the entire world is a source of
concern, but I believe those children don’t learn anything staying in the adult
classes. They just fall asleep, and I don’t blame them. The deity-worshippers
also indoctrinate their children early into their faith and they religiously
abide by the rules of the deity. Therefore by the time they’re grown, they’re
deeply-rooted in their religion and it’ll take a mountain to convince them
otherwise.

With Christianity being one of the largest organised religions
in the world, why would it seem it is becoming an endangered religion? In Christianity,
we are taught to believe that it is not the number of the congregation that
matters, but the spirit of God in the congregation. With the way churches
sprout up in every nook and cranny of the country, one would think that evil
will disappear from the society. Rather, it seems to be getting worse. Who are
the perpetrators? The same people that fill the pews in the churches? See why
we’re in trouble? Disunity in the church; different denominations teach
different things. I just read of a pastor that chained his own nine-year old
son for over one month in order to cast out the spirit of stealing from the
boy!! Can you imagine that??!!
I don’t think the Christian religion is endangered if you
merely look at the increasing number of congregations that fill the churches.
However, if you look at the true practice of Christianity by its members, you’d
see that the church is dying gradually and we don’t even realize it. Instead of
wailing that other religions want to take over, let us do something to avoid
them winning over our youths and children.
Have a fruitful week everyone!
Hugs…
